Tailored Expositions: Sicilian Summer in Dolce & Gabbana SS27 Collection

The menswear collection presented by Dolce & Gabbana for its Spring/Summer 2027 season was a highly philosophical piece of art. Mixing sartorial prowess with creative eagerness, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana managed to compress into their interwoven fabrics the sound, taste, and spirit of a "Vacanze Siciliane."

Inspired by Goethe’s Grand Tour during the German polymath’s mid-life crisis, the collection begins and ends with either a wink to Renaissance chiaroscuro or one to Goethe’s theory of color. Either way, their creative effort showcased a calm and controlled structure, with a pinch of spontaneity, too.

The show was divided into three, starting with garments completely in the brand’s staple, Sicilian black, and finishing with an all-white parade. The second section was the main course, where a Mediterranean palette of sun-kissed fabrics brought to mind limestone, warm sand, pistachios, and the blue water that flows across the Strait of Messina.

Masterfully constructed shirts of Sangallo lace that recalled the Valentino Spring/Summer 2024 collection, and a clever use of crochet to give their fits breathability, spoke of a summer collection aware of rising seasonal temperatures. Shorts were extremely short, shirts often featured eyelet perforations, and there was generous use of linen and silk to give the clothes a fresh touch.

Architecturally à la mode, the collection included certain aspects that were reminiscent of recent Louis Vuitton propositions, such as embroidered gems and Japanese Sashiko. This recalls what Picasso once said: “Good artists copy; great artists steal!” Improving on what others have previously offered the fashion world, this collection is ready to be suited and booted.
