Tailored Expositions: Soshiotsuki Fall/Winter 2026 collection’s triumphant cultural mix
The Soshiotsuki Fall/Winter 2026 menswear collection is a sober and elegant blend of 1980s fashion and Japanese aesthetic philosophy. Presented at Pitti Immagine Uomo, a biannual event held in Florence that serves as a trend-setting platform for men’s clothing, the assemblage featured collaborations with Gunze, a Japanese clothing company founded in 1896, Camisas Manolo, a Spanish shirt maker, and ASICS Sportstyle for footwear. These partnerships showcase designer Soshi Otsuki’s interest in bridging centuries of craftsmanship with contemporary street utility.
Fabrics are heavy and nostalgic. The conspicuous drape is devastatingly stylish, while the logic with which the looks are curated makes the silhouette both masculine and sensitive. Trousers are cut at the waist, and jackets are made with an excess of fabric that extends the front and back hems well below the hip. The male figure appears taller and more sophisticated, while the swaying materials lend the looks an arresting presence. The surplus material also fits the Japanese concept of Ma, which purposely uses the space between the body and cloth not as an empty space, but as a gap that invites contemplation, balance, and harmony within the composition.
The relaxed shoulders in some looks and shoulder pads in others, along with the wide trousers anchored at narrow black leather dress shoes, made the Nippon inspiration mixed with 1980s dress visible throughout—a combination that could also be heard accompanying the show's Studio Ghibli-like soundtrack. Wearable clothing for the colder months—with tweeds, pinstriped wools, and corduroy all used deliberately to add physical weight and visual density—makes this a collection that is comfortable, beautiful, and stylish. It deserves to be suited and booted.
