Luxe Lineup: Gucci cruise show

Denma’s latest Gucci show was star-studded and flashy, with the production taking up the entirety of Times Square. Celebrities like Tom Brady and Paris Hilton were featured along with famous models like Cindy Crawford, Candice Swanepoel, and Kate Moss.

As someone who was fortunate to watch the show from the middle of Times Square on the iconic TKTS steps, I can say that the turnout to watch celebrities enter the venue and view the closed-off show from the Times Square monitors made the already overwhelming Midtown Manhattan, that much more so.

When entering Father Duffy Square (home of the iconic red steps and location of Denma’s show) an overwhelming swarm of security and onlookers surrounded the perimeter of the runway and the viewing area on the stairs. The instructions on how to enter said viewing area were rather cryptic, leading to me walking right into Alex Consani in confusion as she said “sorry,” and kept strutting. Going from this interaction to seeing her walk the runway two hours later made the whole show feel different than if I were watching at home.

The show has garnered mixed reviews for being “not Gucci enough” or having too much celebrity intervention, or even due to the use of cellphones on the runway. This again might be due to the fact that I had a personally positive experience watching from the big red steps in Times Square, but watching new technology come across the stage, I thought of it showing how to wear the fashion within the current digital age of our society. Because of the celebrity inclusions, which other than the models I think they could have done without, I would give Denma’s Gucci Cruise show a rating of everything but the fit. I enjoyed my time in the audience, I appreciated the garments and the use of modern life shown on the runway, but thought the use of popular sports and TV stars cheapened the look in the end.
