During this year’s Paris Fashion Week, in the darkness of an underground garage in Le Marais—Victor Hugo’s neighborhood—Louis Gabriel Nouchi introduced his fall/winter 2027 collection. On the runway, models dressed as figures straight out of the sci-fi movie Alien, wearing costumes over their clothing that made them look as grotesque as Quasimodo or Gwynplaine.
The 1979 Ridley Scott movie was the cornerstone for the construction of this assortment. Nouchi’s childhood nostalgia is conspicuous throughout, deeply inspired by the work of H.R. Giger’s biomechanical aesthetic and by the powerful presence of Sigourney Weaver in the movie. With excess fabric at times, and lack thereof on other occasions, the collection felt fluid, daring, and new.
The elongated silhouettes seen throughout the collection, from liquid-leather coats to seductive cut-outs, gave the whole array an air of pride, power, and preponderance that really served as a means to display the predatory sense of the Alien that has to eat other humans in order to reveal its own race.
The strength, the boldness, the sumptuous presence, and the revolutionary idea: this is a collection to be suited and booted.
