Peak Pursuit: Is Pre-Workout Actually Worth It?

Walk into almost any gym, and you will probably see someone shaking a brightly colored powder into a water bottle before starting their workout. Pre-workout supplements have become a popular part of gym culture, especially among young athletes and fitness seekers who want an extra boost. 

The popularity of pre-workout supplements makes sense. After a long day at school or work, you may struggle to find the energy to work out. Pre-workout supplements claim to address this lack of energy by increasing energy levels, improving concentration, delaying fatigue, and even helping you lift more weight for longer.

But do pre-workout supplements really help you perform better in the gym, or are you just getting an overpriced cup of coffee? 

The answer depends partly on the product's actual composition, how you use it, and what you expect from it.

What’s Actually In The Pre-Workout

Unlike some other products, such as creatine supplements or protein powder, “pre-workout” isn't a single ingredient; it's a mixture of components that vary by recipe.

As University Hospitals notes, the major components of pre-workout supplements include caffeine, beta-alanine, amino acids, electrolytes, creatine, and compounds like citrulline, taurine, tyrosine, or betaine.

But not all of these ingredients have the same level of evidence.

Among these components, caffeine is one of the most important, and many people drink it every day. Caffeine affects the central nervous system by blocking adenosine, which is responsible for making you feel sleepy. In this context, caffeine boosts alertness and makes physical activity easier to tolerate. 

“Caffeine is the most widely studied pre-workout ingredient and a proven enhancer of athletic performance, alertness, and concentration,” explains Kelli Santiago, a board-certified sports dietitian at University Hospitals. In other words, the effect that a person feels because of their pre-workout supplements can sometimes be nothing but the effect of caffeine.

What About The Other Ingredients? 

Another common ingredient is beta-alanine, which may cause the tingling sensation some people feel shortly after taking pre-workout.

Beta-alanine is known to increase carnosine levels in the muscle. Carnosine helps moderate acidity during workouts, which can help with exertion. But research on beta-alanine is not as detailed as research on caffeine. Studies suggest beta-alanine may offer modest benefits during short periods of intense exercise, but results vary by activity and individual.

The tingling doesn't mean the supplement is working wonders. This effect is called paresthesia, and while it is mostly harmless, the sensation can make the supplement seem more powerful than it is.

Then we have creatine, perhaps the most studied supplement in sports.

Creatine helps muscles generate energy quickly during high-intensity activity and improves overall force, power, and performance across successive high-intensity efforts. This is why creatine is particularly useful for strength training and sprinting. However, creatine doesn't work immediately after you take it. The benefit comes from regularly replenishing creatine levels in the muscles; therefore, taking creatine just before training doesn't matter.

Other ingredients in pre-workout supplements are not as scientifically tested as the three above.

For instance, branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs, are routinely marketed as something that helps improve performance. However, Santiago points out that there is little evidence to back up the claim that BCAAs boost the energy, power, and stamina of an athlete.

This is one reason pre-workout can be difficult to assess, as the efficacy of individual ingredients varies from product to product.

When A Boost Becomes A Dependency

The psychological side of pre-workout use should also not be overlooked.

For some individuals, taking pre-workout becomes a part of their workout ritual. They scoop powder, prepare drinks, feel the caffeine rush, and voila, it is time to exercise. A ritual is not inherently problematic, but relying on stimulants before every workout may cause your relationship with your own energy levels to shift. 

When you consume caffeine regularly, tolerance may develop; as a result, its effect may diminish over time. Someone who started with half a scoop of powder might choose a full scoop and then look for even stronger formulas. 

Excess caffeine often causes insomnia, jitters, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and various other side effects. This is especially true when someone uses pre-workout in the evening. While caffeine will boost energy for exercise, it may also hinder sleep later. This lack of sleep can make a person feel even more fatigued the next day, which may increase the urge to take pre-workout again before training.

More Energy Does Not Always Mean A Better Workout

One reason pre-workouts are popular is that their effects are easy to notice. Caffeine helps you remain alert. Beta-alanine can lead to a tingling sensation on your skin. Some products provide an instant energy boost.

However, feeling stimulated does not mean you're getting results.

Muscle gain, strength, endurance, and general fitness largely depend on proper training, good nutrition, adequate hydration, recovery, and sleep. A supplement can slightly improve performance during exercise but cannot replace the fundamentals above.

Another question is what you are actually paying for. Pre-workouts often contain multiple substances in one formula, and supplements aren't regulated the same way as medical drugs. University Hospitals states that you should opt for supplements that have undergone third-party evaluation. This is especially important for athletes, who must be careful about supplements with undeclared or prohibited components.

Is Pre-workout Worth It?

Pre-workout products can benefit some individuals.  Pre-workout may help improve your concentration and performance during a workout. Some ingredients, such as caffeine and creatine, are well supported by research when used properly in certain circumstances.

Nonetheless, that doesn't mean everyone needs pre-workout.

As a matter of fact, Santiago argues that it’s perfectly fine to just drink coffee instead of the pre-workout. She tells people they can often skip pre-workout, have one or two cups of black coffee, and still get caffeine without the extra ingredients that usually accompany pre-workouts.

This comparison shows something significant about the supplementation industry. Sometimes the ingredients that do the most aren't the exotic compounds mentioned in the product title. It could be caffeine.

To sum it up, view pre-workout as a tool, not a necessity. Include it in your training routine as long as you use it in moderation, and it doesn't affect your overall well-being. However, if you think you need pre-workouts to become physically active and are interested in more powerful versions, the real problem might not be what kind of pre-workout you should buy. It may be worth asking why you feel unable to train without it in the first place.
